  • 5% and 18% restaurant rates
  • Prices with or without GST
  • Round-off included
Short answer

To add GST, multiply the bill by the rate. On a ₹1,000 bill at 5%, GST is ₹50 (₹25 CGST and ₹25 SGST), so the total is ₹1,050. To take GST out of a price that already includes it, divide by 1.05: ₹1,050 ÷ 1.05 = ₹1,000 before GST.

Work out the GST on your bill.

This amount is
GST rate
Bill total ₹1,050
Value before GST₹1,000.00
CGST 2.5%₹25.00
SGST 2.5%₹25.00
Total GST₹50.00
Exact total₹1,050.00
Round off₹0.00

For a sale inside your state: half CGST, half SGST.

Since the GST changes that came into force on 22 September 2025, a standalone restaurant cannot declare itself “specified premises” to charge 18% with credit. The “specified premises” test has been based on the actual room value of the previous financial year since 1 April 2025. How the calculator works

When your prices are before GST:

  • GST = amount × rate ÷ 100
  • CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2, each rounded to the paisa
  • Total = amount + CGST + SGST

When your prices already include GST:

  • Value before GST = amount ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
  • GST = amount − value before GST, split equally into CGST and SGST

Round off = the total rounded to the nearest rupee − the exact total. It can be a few paise up or down.

Stop doing this by hand

Venditas POS works this out on every bill. It prints your GSTIN and FSSAI number, CGST and SGST for each tax rate, and the round-off, whether your menu prices include GST or not. It also handles composition scheme bills. It costs ₹3 per paid order after 30 days free, with every feature included. See pricing, or set your menu prices with the menu price calculator.

Questions

Quick answers

What GST rate applies to restaurant food in India?

Most standalone restaurants charge 5% GST and cannot claim input tax credit. Restaurants at “specified premises” (hotels where a room was supplied at more than ₹7,500 a day in the previous financial year) charge 18% with input tax credit. Since the September 2025 GST changes, a standalone restaurant cannot choose the 18% option. Check your own case with your CA.

How is GST split into CGST and SGST?

For a sale inside your state, half the GST is CGST and half is SGST. On a 5% bill that is 2.5% CGST and 2.5% SGST; on an 18% bill it is 9% and 9%.

How do I take GST out of a price that already includes it?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. At 5%, ₹210 ÷ 1.05 = ₹200 before GST, so the GST inside the price is ₹10 (₹5 CGST and ₹5 SGST).

Can a composition scheme restaurant charge GST on the bill?

No. A restaurant under the composition scheme pays 5% of its turnover itself. It cannot show or collect GST on the bill, issues a bill of supply, and must print “composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies”. Use the 0% option to see such a bill.

Should the bill total be rounded?

Most restaurants round the bill total to the nearest rupee and print the difference as a round-off line. This calculator shows the exact total, the round-off and the rounded total.

Is GST charged on packing or service charges on the bill?

Charges you add to a restaurant bill, such as packing or a service charge, are usually part of the bill’s value and taxed at the same rate as the food. Check with your CA for your case.

Can my billing software do this on every bill?
